Shri Digvijaya Singh was born on
February 28, 1947. He is the son of Shri Balbhadra Singh, ex-ruler
of Raghogarh in Guna district. Shri Singh received his
early education in Daly College, Indore. An engineering graduate
from Govindram Saksesaria Technology Institute, Indore, Shri
Digvijay Singh joined active politics in 1971. Gifted with an
outstanding organizing skill, he became the President of Raghogarh
Municipal Committee at a young age of 22. He distinguished himself
in this capacity for three years before making it to the Board of
Directors of Guna District Cooperative Bank. Shri Digvijaya
Singh was first returned to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly
on a Congress ticket from Raghogarh constituency in 1977. He has
been a member of the Pradesh Congress Committee since 1972. Shri
Singh was appointed the General Secretary of the Madhya Pradesh
Youth Congress in 1978-79. He was again returned to the Assembly in
1980 from the same constituency and was inducted as a Minister of
State in the Arjun Singh Ministry. Shri Singh held the portfolio of
Agriculture. Later, he was elevated to the rank of Cabined Minister
and held the portfolio of Irrigation. Shri Digvijaya Singh
was elected to the Lok Sabha from Rajgarh constituency in 1984. He
has held the post of MPCC (I) President twice. First, he was elected
to this post in 1984 and again in 1992. He was again elected to the
Lok Sabha in 1991 from Rajgarh constituency. A progressive
farmer, Shri Digvijaya Singh has a modern outlook towards
agriculture. He is also a good player of hockey, tennis and cricket.
Shri Singh traveled to U.S., France, Sweden, England, Holand,
Germany, Switerzerland, South Africa etc. Shri Digvijaya
Singh took over as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh on December
7, 1993. Shri Singh after being re-elected for the Vidhan
Sabha took oath as the Chief Minister on December 1, 1998 for the
second term. He continued as Chief Minister till December, 2003.
He has been made Member, Congress Working Committee in
February, 2004 and General Secretary, All India Congress Committee,
New Delhi in the same year and continues in the above position.
